ARABSAT SELECTS NEXT 2 SATELLITES
ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The Saudi-led ArabSat consortium has signed contracts for its next two communications satellites.
A consortium of EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space has been constructing the satellites for ArabSat. Executives said Astrium would supply and integrate payloads on the Eurostar E-3000 satellites. Thales Alenia Space has been designing the communications payloads.
"The introduction of the first-ever in orbit hot back-up in the MENA region, as well as Ka-band, will allow us to offer to our customers an unprecedented level and unrivalled range of services," ArabSat president Khalid Balkheyour said.
On June 16, ArabSat signed a contract with EADS-Astrium and Thales Alenia Space to build the first two of its fifth- generation satellites. Contracts were also signed with International Launch Services and France's Arianespace for the launch of these satellites between the third quarter of 2009 and first quarter of 2010.
